Why Rush?
|
The Why and How of RushThe decision to go to college is one of the most significant choices that you will ever have to make. The next three or four (or five or six or seven...) years of your life will not only be demanding, rigorous, and confusing, but also broadening, rewarding, and fun. You will meet a countless number of people, and together you will share many unforgettable experiences. You will also be freer than ever before to make your own decisions and to learn about who you really are. Fortunately, you have chosen to study at an institution that many regard as being the finest in the country. Unfortunately, it is also one of the toughest universities to not only learn and study at, but also to socialize and become friendly with a distinct group. A university as large as the University of Maryland, College Park can be overwhelming and at certain times many students feel lost or lonely. This is particularly true for freshman who are not used to having this much independence thrown onto their shoulders. Thus, one of the best ways to make lasting friendships and have fun is to join a fraternity. Fraternity membership will provide you with the opportunity for academic assistance, leadership and organizational development, intramural competition, and community service work. It will also provide you with a way to form a quick, permanent, and well-respected group identity with which you can develop both spirit and pride not only with your specific organization, but all Greeks in general (this is great for people in large schools). Most importantly, membership can provide lasting memories and lifelong friendships that are formed and tightened through a bond of brotherhood. One of the best things about being part of a fraternity is seeing one of your fraternal brothers walking around the campus at the same time as you. There is something very comforting about knowing that you have something in common with this person and that he will be very willing to talk with you about anything and everything that may be on your mind. Furthermore, membership in AEPi at Maryland will provide you with the best way to meet fellow Jewish men and women on campus who are interested in the same things as you. Maryland is an extremely culturally diverse school and with so many students enrolled there, it can be tough to meet ethnically similar people. We are the only Jewish fraternity on campus, as well as the only nationally Jewish fraternity. AEPi at Maryland was founded because there was something missing on campus: a strong force that would allow Jewish men to grow both socially and academically while respecting and valuing their heritage. For your benefit, we at the Delta Deuteron Chapter of AEPi at the University of Maryland, College Park have planned exciting events in order to tender to your needs during the turbulent adjustment of the first month of school. We will be running sports events, watching football games, tailgating, having barbecues and dinners, going to some parties, and participating in interactive games. Also, we will be trying our best to show you around the city and campus by providing tours. In addition, we will be designating special times for course and timetable discussions. This will benefit you as your will be able to ask the brothers (don't forget, all of the brothers have been through the experience that you are about to embark on) any question that you might have about what you should be doing, where you should take your classes, which professors are good, and which courses are truly hard and which ones are truly easier. Therefore, we encourage you to participate in fraternity rush. Here are a few helpful tips for rushing: ENJOY YOUR RUSH: Rush is meant to be fun, so take it that way. If you do what you want to do, then rush will be a fun and enriching experience. Remember, all of us are in this to meet new people, and that is always fun. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS: What do you want out of a fraternity? Do you want to be leader? Do you want to be recognized as part of a group? Do you want to establish a network of connections to be used once you graduate? Do you want to make new friends? Ask yourself what you want, because that will make it easier for us to know who you are. JUST BE YOURSELF: Rush with us because we fit your personality. There are always guys in the fraternity who will have similar interests to you. That is what we want to know about - who you are. LEARN FROM RUSH: Get as much out of rush as possible. Ask questions about school and the campus. Try to meet new friends that you normally would not get a chance to meet. MEET AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN: Spend as much time with us as you can during rush. This will give us ample time to get to know you and will also prove to us that you're interested and committed to the brotherhood. Also, try and meet all of the members and don't be afraid to either introduce yourself or ask us to introduce you around. Remember, one or two members can't get you in to the fraternity even if you are the "Big Man On Campus". It is especially important that you meet the Rush Chairman and other officers. They can have a lot of influence. BE AVAILABLE DURING RUSH WEEK: We will send out flyers during Rush, however we need your help as well. Make sure that we have your name, phone, and room numbers. That way we will be able to contact you. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED: If a friend of yours gets a call from us and you don't, don't panic, it may be that we just don't know who you are and that you are around. Please do not hesitate to give one of us a call (try for the Rush Chairman); you may be the member we have been looking for all along. Little Known Facts About Fraternities
